If you’ve stumbled upon this blog because you’re 1. A current competitive dancer checking if you marked all the checkboxes to leave regret-free, or 2. Simply curious about what’s inside our G.O.O.D. alumni’s heads, you’re in the right place.

Many former competitive dancers in the SoCal community can relate when we say retiring from a competitive season isn’t an easy decision. It’s equally an important milestone as your first day on a competitive team! Like all precious life chapters that have a beginning and an end, we are often left with gratitude, bittersweetness, and lessons.

After (virtually) sitting down and surveying our alumni network spanning from the B.C (before competition) years to now, I’ve gathered 10 things they wish they had the chance to do before retiring the G.O.O.D. Project.

1. “The one thing I wish I had the chance to do before retiring from G.O.O.D. is performing at Vibe with them.”

David Carlos – 1 A.E

2. “Probably teach one of my pieces? I don’t know, I kind of like the way my time on G.O.O.D. was spent as is so things like regrets never really crossed my mind, to be honest.”

Nic Cabal – 1 A.E

3. “G.O.O.D. was the last competitive dance team I was a part of, so I wish I had worked more on my craft and expanding my creative side. This would’ve let me create more choreography that I was proud of and gave me the confidence to even want to teach a G.O.O.D. Friday.”

Kim Cheng – 2 A.E

4. “Putting myself out there more in terms of dancing and connecting with teammates.”

Randy Mekdara – 2 A.E

5. “Honestly, there’s not many things I wish I had done before retiring from G.O.O.D. If anything, it would be to be more present and spend more time with the people we have lost (Jerry & Jamel).”

Keenwei Lin – 1 A.E

6. “Choreograph/advise for a risky, meaningful set”

Benedict Dungca – 2 A.E

7. “I wish I could’ve performed a couple more times!”

Julia Vargas – 1 B.C

8. “I wish I got to actually get close with everyone on the team. Although it’s a large team and it’s hard to get close with everyone, I definitely take it for granted now and continue to try to catch up with people.”

Joseph Chong – 3 A.E

9. “I wish I had the chance to get to know everyone’s story. To REALLY understand other people’s pain. I wish I focused more on feeling WITH other people instead of feeling FOR people.”

Loreign Santos – 3 B.C.

10. “One thing that I regret that I didn’t do was take full advantage of the creative energy on good. I wish I used that time to develop my own choreography in hopes that one day it would make a set!”

Calvin Manosa – 1 A.E

Every dancer has a different experience and a different set of personal goals. All those diversities are what make G.O.O.D. Project the team it is today. A dance team is a vessel for your growth as it is for everyone else on the team. Each dancer leaves a unique mark that contributes to a legacy not only for the team but for themselves. What do you want your mark to look like?

7 Leadership Books Every Dance Director Must Read

Today I’m going to share the 7 books that influenced how I led The GOOD Project to become an impactful competitive dance team in the community. To say that I enjoyed every moment of my 8+ (5 of them with GOOD) years directing would be a big fat lie.
